A true crime fan is one of the easier people to buy for and one of the easier to get wrong. The easy part is that they have a clear interest. The hard part is that the genre is wide: someone who loves a comedy podcast with friends will not necessarily want a long book about a murder trial, and someone deep into cold cases will not want a novelty mug.
This guide is organised by the kind of listener you are shopping for, not by product. It covers books and audiobooks matched to different habits, and a few things from our own shop for people who would rather wear their obsession. Every book is real and described accurately, and we have not rated any of them.
A note on the links. Links to Amazon UK are affiliate links, and we earn a commission if you buy through them. That never affects which podcasts we review or how we rate them. Links to our own shop are not affiliate links: those are our products. See our affiliate policy.
For someone new to true crime
Killers of the Flower Moon — David Grann
If the person is just getting into the genre, this is the book we would give. It covers the murders of members of the Osage Nation in 1920s Oklahoma and the early FBI investigation that followed, it moves in order and it is clear about the human cost. It works well in print and as an audiobook, and we have confirmed an audiobook edition on Amazon UK.
It is a serious book about a serious subject, so it is a better gift for someone who likes history than for someone who wants light listening. For a lighter start, point them to our best true crime podcasts for beginners.
For the person who is obsessed with one case
I'll Be Gone in the Dark — Michelle McNamara
For a listener who loves a long investigation, this is the most natural pick. It is Michelle McNamara's years-long inquiry into the Golden State Killer, completed after her death and published in 2018. Someone who follows serialised podcasts will recognise the pull, and the case has several good podcasts for afterwards, which we cover in our Golden State Killer guide.
It describes serious violence, so it is not for everyone. Think about whether the recipient is comfortable with that before you buy.
For the person who wants to understand how offenders think
Mindhunter — John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker
Douglas was an FBI agent who interviewed convicted serial killers in the 1970s and 1980s and helped shape the Bureau's approach to profiling. The book is his account, and it was the basis for the Netflix series of the same name. It makes a good gift for someone who liked the show and wants to know where it came from.
It is a memoir, and criminal profiling has since been questioned by researchers, so it is best read as history rather than science. That is worth mentioning in the card if you suspect they will take it as gospel.
For the fan who likes the comedy side
Stay Sexy & Don't Get Murdered — Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark
This is the book by the hosts of My Favorite Murder, and it is the right gift for a fan of the podcast. We list My Favorite Murder as good if niche interests you: it is a warm, funny show aimed at people who find straight true crime too heavy. If the person you are buying for loves that style, a book from the hosts is a better fit than a case file.
If they like that style more generally, our guides to podcasts like My Favorite Murder and best comedy true crime podcasts are good follow-ups.
For the person who would like to wear it
Our own shop sells true crime merchandise designed for podcast listeners, printed to order in the UK. The designs are typographic and the three collections each suit a different kind of person.
- The Armchair Detective is for the person with theories. The Professional Armchair Detective Hoodie and the Everyone Is a Suspect Mug are the obvious picks.
- The Podcast Addict is for the person who is always one more episode in. Try the Just One More Episode Mug or the Shhh… I'm Listening to a Case Tote Bag.
- The Case Files is the moodier collection, with designs like Case File: 001 and Unresolved.
Because everything is printed to order, it is made after you buy rather than taken from a shelf. That means a production stage before delivery, so if you are buying for a particular date, order early and read our shipping policy for the current delivery estimate. Our returns and refunds policy explains what happens if something is wrong.
You can browse everything at the Listen True Crime shop.

Delivery from our shop
A practical note if you are buying merchandise. Our shop currently delivers to UK addresses only, so it is not the right choice for a gift going abroad. Everything is printed to order and sent by the print provider, and an order containing several items can arrive in more than one parcel. We email tracking when each parcel is dispatched. The books and audiobooks above come through Amazon UK, which has its own delivery and returns terms.
For the listener who prefers short formats
Not everyone wants a long book. If the person you are buying for likes quick, self-contained listening, the better gift may be a recommendation for a short podcast, and our guide to the best short true crime podcasts is a good place to find one. A mug or tote from the shop sits well alongside it, and it keeps the gift light.
Choosing well
A few habits make the difference between a gift that lands and one that feels off.
Match the tone to the listener. Someone who enjoys a comedy podcast may find a grim case file unwelcome. Someone who listens to serious investigative shows like Serial or Casefile may find a joke mug a bit thin. If you are not sure, a book on a historical case is a reasonable middle ground.
Think about what a case might mean to them. True crime is entertainment for many people and a lived experience for some. If you are not certain that the subject is safe for the recipient, choose something more general, or ask.
Check how they listen. If you know they use an audiobook service, an audiobook edition may suit them better than print. We cover the question in Is Audible worth it for true crime fans?.
Include a way out. A gift receipt or a note saying you can swap it means the person is free to choose a different book.
If you are still stuck
Give them a recommendation instead of an object. A short list of three podcasts they have not heard, chosen from our best true crime podcasts page, costs nothing and often goes down well. For a wider reading list, our best true crime books 2026 is a good place to browse, and for audiobooks see the best true crime audiobooks on Audible.
