Best True Crime Podcasts to Binge in a Weekend

Some podcasts are best consumed weekly, episode by episode, as part of a regular listening habit. And then there are the shows that make that impossible — the ones you start on Friday evening and emerge from sometime Sunday, slightly disoriented and relieved you don't live near any of the people involved.

These are those shows. Each is a complete limited series with 6-20 episodes, each tells one story from start to finish, and each is best experienced in a concentrated binge rather than stretched across months.

Dirty John

Episodes: 6 | Total time: ~4 hours | Difficulty: Accessible

The show that popularised the format. Dirty John covers the relationship between Debra Newell, a successful interior designer, and John Meehan — a man who presented himself as a doctor but was something quite different. Based on journalist Christopher Goffard's LA Times investigation.

Dirty John is the best starting point for the limited-series format because it's expertly paced, doesn't require prior knowledge, and builds tension consistently across its six episodes. Meehan is a specific and frightening type of predator — manipulative, charming, and systematic — and Goffard's journalism makes the mechanics of the manipulation legible without reducing Debra Newell to a fool.

Six episodes. Start Friday afternoon. Finish Saturday.

Serial Season 1

Episodes: 12 + epilogue | Total time: ~9 hours | Difficulty: Accessible

If you haven't listened to Serial Season 1, listen to Serial Season 1. The investigation of Adnan Syed's conviction for the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee in Baltimore is the podcast that made the genre mainstream, and its bingeability is built into the episode structure — each episode ends on an open question that demands you start the next one.

The case has resolution now (Syed's conviction was vacated in 2022 following prosecutorial misconduct revelations), but the podcast doesn't resolve — it stops at the point Koenig reached in 2014, uncertain and still investigating. The uncertainty is the point.

Twelve episodes at 45-55 minutes each. A committed Saturday-Sunday binge.

Teacher's Pet

Episodes: 14 | Total time: ~10 hours | Difficulty: Moderate

The Australian journalist Hedley Thomas investigation of the 1982 disappearance of Lynette Dawson — the case that contributed to Chris Dawson's 2022 murder conviction. Teacher's Pet is slower to start than Dirty John, and the Australian context requires some adjustment for non-Australian listeners, but from episode 4 onward it's among the most compulsive listening in the genre.

The combination of cold-case uncertainty and live journalism (Thomas is actively pursuing new information throughout) creates tension that's genuinely different from narrative podcasts with known endings. You don't know where this is going, even though you're listening years after the conviction.

Dr. Death

Episodes: 8 | Total time: ~6 hours | Difficulty: Accessible

Eight tight episodes on neurosurgeon Christopher Duntsch, who harmed or killed dozens of patients while hospital systems failed to stop him. Journalist Laura Beil makes the surgical and regulatory details accessible, and the pacing is tight — Dr. Death doesn't waste a minute.

The show's best quality is its focus on systemic failure rather than individual villainy. Duntsch is disturbing, but the hospitals that kept credentialing him are equally disturbing, and Beil gives both equal attention.

Bear Brook

Episodes: 6 | Total time: ~4 hours | Difficulty: Accessible

Six episodes from New Hampshire Public Radio on the identification of four murder victims found in barrels in New Hampshire forests. The forensic methodology — specifically how genetic genealogy works — is explained better than in any other podcast, and the six-episode structure is compact enough that the show never overstays its welcome.

Best Saturday morning listen on this list. Clear enough to have on in the background while doing other things; compelling enough that you'll stop and pay attention.

Over My Dead Body (Season 1: Tally)

Episodes: 6 | Total time: ~4.5 hours | Difficulty: Accessible

Wondery's limited series format is consistent: six episodes per season, one case, high production values. Season 1 covers the Dan Markel case — a Florida State University law professor shot in his driveway in 2014. The investigation revealed a murder-for-hire plot that went to the highest levels of his ex-wife's family.

The production quality is notable — Over My Dead Body uses professional voice actors for recreations, which divides listeners but makes it unusually listenable as audio. Season 1 is the strongest.

The Dropout

Episodes: 6 | Total time: ~4.5 hours | Difficulty: Accessible

Rebecca Jarvis's investigation of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. Six episodes. High production values. Strong access to former employees and investors. The best audio treatment of the Theranos story before the criminal trial.

Heaven's Gate

Episodes: 10 | Total time: ~8 hours | Difficulty: Moderate

Glynn Washington's investigation of the Heaven's Gate UFO cult covers the group from its formation through the 1997 mass suicide at Rancho Santa Fe. The interviews with surviving members — people who were part of the group and weren't there on the final night — are unlike anything else in the genre.

Ten episodes, longer than most on this list, but the quality sustains the length. A challenging weekend listen, but among the most substantive.

How to Binge Effectively

A few observations from the format:

Start with the show you're most uncertain about. If you're already sure you'll love Serial, save it for when you need comfort listening. Start your weekend with the show you're less sure about — you want to discover whether it works while you have time to adjust your plan.

Pace yourself on the darkest content. Bear Brook and Heaven's Gate both have heavy material. Building in daylight breaks, especially after episodes covering child victims or mass death, is useful for sustaining engagement across a whole weekend.

Don't start a 14-episode series on Sunday evening. Teacher's Pet especially. You will not sleep.
